Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father's death in the role of a carnival barker at the age of a young girl She was required to provide for the family by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth went to school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. She only attended school for two years before going on to pursue an acting career. The path she chose to take turned out to be fraught with difficulties: In New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills in a magazine for crime however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. When she was employed as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. She worked as an usherette during the early morning hours and also was a part of the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first ever permanent acting job. Her studies in drama led her to earn her degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
